Fashionista: Fashion Tips for 2008

It's the new year and, if you're sick of your old style, it may be time to update your look.
January is the perfect time to revamp everything from your makeup to your shoes, which is why all the fashion magazines are brimming with ideas, strategies and advice.

1. Bust out of your hair and makeup rut - it's an easy way to make a fast change.

Cropped cuts, bright eyeshadow, big-time blush, sun-kissed skin, long and loose hair, red or pink lips and dramatic eyes are some of the season's best looks.

2. Add these three hot items to your wardrobe: sleeveless jackets, which provide "a more structured look with less fuss"; peep-toe booties, which bring "a small dose of sexiness" and "the perfect amount of playfulness"; and fluid trousers, since "looser is in this season."Keep your schoolboy blazers, the oxford lace-up shoes and skinny slacks, but toss your ponchos, over-the-knee boots and leggings

3. Incorporate metallics into your clothing, shoes, and accessories. A soft clutch, a tiered necklace and shapely wedges share a glow that injects basic black or denim looks with a dose of pure alchemy."And if you're going for cutting edge, choose rose gold, "the newest metallic to be mined for glam day or night pieces."

4. Discover a brave new nail colour. To find a dark, arresting polish, choose a hue that complements your skin tone. The pros say dark complexions look best in rich burgundies with gold undertones and in deep purples. Women with medium or olive skin wear deep berries and reds well. The roaring '20s are inspiring fashion designers these days. So the next time you have a big night out, be bold and wear a flapper gown.

5. Experiment with your shoe collection. Stilettos aren't the only sexy shoe this year. "If you're afraid of a six-inch heel, go for platform shoes!". They're very sexy and much easier to live with."

6.Consider denim in a colour other than blue. Start with jeans in a washed-out shade. Then throw on a not-so-girly jacket, but make sure your top isn't also bright. To nail the look, make sure your coloured jeans aren't too tight and wear neutral shoes - black is too heavy for this look.

7. Thinking of chopping your hair? A choppy boy crop works well on hair that's fine and straight, a piecey pixie cut suits wavy hair, while a bob with swing is great for thick or straightened hair.

8. Make eyeliner your beauty staple.

9. Sheer clothing is a strong trend for spring. Your must-have sheer item for spring is a top, play peekaboo with a see-through skirt. Veiled layers give you diaphanous coverage without the big reveal.

10. Get clashing. So mix your florals with your stripes, the paisley with the polka dots. Anything goes this spring, and the bolder, the better.

2. Do your homework: Make a seasonal wish list before you go shopping. Prep by reading magazines, fashion blogs and watching fashion show recaps to compile your must-haves list.

3. Ask the pros: If you spot someone sassy on the subway wearing the perfect outfit, why not ask where she got it? New boutiques and “it” spots sprout up quickly, so finding new shops from people on the street or new acquaintances helps to set you apart.

4. Don’t discriminate: Sometimes the best finds are those hidden gems you can find in bargain bins and sample sales. Don’t assume a high price tag dictates good fashion or you could overlook some fantastic frugal finds.

5. Bargain like mad: Who doesn’t love a bargain? Always ask for discounts on slightly damaged (but fixable) pieces, bulk purchases from boutiques. Even if you’re buying a day or two ahead of an upcoming storewide sale, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

6. Accessorize: Earrings, scarves, shoes, handbags and hair pins can change your entire look. When you’re getting dressed, be sure to save time for the important finishing touches that can make or break your entire outfit.

7. Build your wardrobe by season: There’s no saying last year’s spring trench coat can’t be worn with a new broach and shoes in this season’s hottest colours. Add classic pieces to your current collection each season. A clever fashionista adapts existing pieces for new occasions.

8. Don’t skimp on quality fabrics: Whether it’s chic cotton T-shirts at H&M or pantsuits at Banana Republic, high-quality fabrics are readily available. Be conscious of the fabric blends you’re buying, wash and care instructions and never settle for cheap clothing just because it’s, well, cheap.

9. Good hair and makeup: No celebrity walks the red carpet without a hair and makeup team following their every move. Take a cue from the experts and make your cosmetics and hair an integral part of your routine. It’s as important an asset as the clothes you’re showcasing.

Top 10 Items Every Fashionista Should Have This Season!

Every fashionista knows fashion changes from season to season. Some trends carry on from one season to the next with a slight change. Then there are the classics that never go away. My top ten list consist of ankle boots, sweater coats, leggings, sweater dresses, skinny jeans, wide leg pants, tall boots, trench/peacoat, leather/suede jackets and shoes (booties, wedge boots, pumps, etc). So here is my list and recommendations for the top ten trends that are a must for Fall 06'.

1. Ankle boots: This is the number one must for fall. Every runway from Prada to Proenze Schouler has them. They vary from platform, wedge and stiletto versions. There are the moderately price ones such a JLO 'Damask' retailing around $150 and Steven by Steve Madden 'Lipstik'and 'Ellise'. Then there are more expensive boots such as Brioni's absolutely gorgeous boots at $835 and Donna Karan boots $587.

2. Sweater Coats: The second trend is sweater coats. Every brand has them, its just buying the right ones. This year its all about the striped and cashmere sweater coats such as the made by Stella McCartney $600 and Vince $275 (cashmere). Keep in mind they are meant to be kind of big so find a size bigger than your normal size.

3. Legging: Surely leggings are 3rd because they are worn with the sweater coats. They are an essential staple this fall. They are worn with mostly all 06' trends. The two top styles come from Alice & Olivia with their grey hues at $128 and Rachel Pally with her skull and bones leggings at $88.They vary a lot in price but should cost no more than $130.

4. Sweater dress: Sweater dresses are worn like sweater coats. They are pair with legging and/or ankle boots for a trendy look or worn with tall boots for a classy look. Try Alice & Olivia's fall line of sweater dresses. They also vary in price.

5. Skinny jeans: This is a summer trend that has carried on into the fall. These jeans are especially good for the fall because they are great with tall boots. This take away the need to tuck your jeans in your boots. They make it easier to put your boots on and gives a sleeker looking appearance. Sass & Bide and Tsubi jeans were the number one skinny jeans brand during the summer selling on ebay for about $150 thanks to Kate Moss and Lindsay Lohan. This fall I predict that True Religion and Tsubi may take this title with their new line of skinny jeans in over 20 shades.

6. Wide-leg pants/jeans. Menswear for women is a big trend, thanks to the wide-leg trouser pants. They can be ultra professional and trendy. It is meant to worn with a button down shirts and/or vest.

7. Tall Boots: Every fall boots all a must have. This year they have been taken to new height. The heels are taller, the heights are higher and the colors are gorgeous. Try looking for Steven and Steve Madden they have high end styles at much lower prices!

8. Trench/peacoats: Trench/peacoats are another classic that never goes out of style. There aren't big changes in them from season to season, but you always feel the need to buy as many as you can. You'll get good use out of them however. Juicy Couture have a beautiful tan trench that cost about $300.

9. Leather and Suede Outerwear: A must have of the fall is a leather and/or suede jacket. This category consist of leather jackets and suede vest. There are so many styles that can be purchased. When looking for a leather jacket try looking for ones with stand collars that zip. In darker shades these style are more edgy and fashionable, try Vince and Bebe. For vest look for the shearling ones. That are lined with wool or fur. They are always edgy. Look for Guess Brand fall shearling vest.
10. Shoes: This category consist of different styles of shoes for fall that are great for fall including booties, wedges, platforms and pumps. These styles vary. They are the shoes that are always fashionable, but there are too many to put in their own caregory. There are booties such as Lipstik by Steve Madden selling for $130, Christian Louboutin which picture is at the very top for $690, and Bebe ankle boots for $140. For wedges there are boots and pump. Try searching for Balenciaga $895 wedge pump and L.A.M.B Charter's $399 wedge boots. remember bright colors are key!
